Chinese Cemetery of Nolette

The Picardy coast also suffered from the Battle of the Somme. The most significant monument is the Nolette Chinese Cemetery in Noyelles sur Mer....

In this cemetery the bodies of 849 Chinese are resting. They died of diseases in the "Native Labour" hospital located near the very important camp in Noyelles sur Mer. These men coming from the English colonies were brought here in 1917 to work at the reconstruction of the English military infrastructures.
The number of Chinese workers started from 54000 at the end of 1917 and reached 96000 during the armistice. Most of them, burried in this cemetery with a chinese architecture, died of disease after a big cholera epidemic.

The entry porch of the cemetery takes place of memorial.
