The first retrospective of Pierre Buraglio’s works dealing with the theme of war, along with the new works created during his residence at the museum in 2011 will be presented in conjuntion with the Historial’s graphic arts collection.
The Historial de la Grande Guerre, which has welcomed Buraglio as artist in residence as part of the interregional project ‘Dessiner/Tracer’ (Drawing/Tracing), is pleased to announce the first retrospective of his graphic works on the theme of war.
For several years now, Buraglio has focused his attention on different wars: that of his early childhood during the 1939-1945 period, that of the concrete bunkers of the Atlantic Wall, that of the wounded soldier Birdy, wars which leave their marks and their wounds on humankind. A selection of these works is presented in the exhibition.
Since 2004, he has been working in particular on his childhood memories from the 1939-1945 period with the multi-part series ‘J1 Vol. 1’, ‘J1 Vol. 2’, ‘J1 Vol. 3’. In these portfolios of prints made from drawings, photographs and words and reworked by hand, he relates memories from his early childhood, memories of wartime France (the ‘J1’ of the title refers to the ration tickets issued for the youngest children − category J1 − during the Second World War).
‘This drawn and pasted diary, coloured and annotated by hand, demonstrates with great subtlety what an autobiography should be: debating with one’s past, in the fragmenting and reassembling of bits of family memories, singular fragments which are rediscovered, recalled, recounted’ (from Annette Becker’s text for the 2010 exhibition of ‘J1 vol. 3’ at the Galerie Catherine Putman, Paris). The second part of the exhibition presents the new works created by Buraglio on the basis of the Historial’s collection during his residence in 2011 at the museum, not far from the World War I battlefields. A selection of drawings from the Historial’s collection is thus exhibited in counterpoint to Buraglio’s work.
