Mers-les-Bains

On the Picardy coast, Mers-les-Bains is a city famous for its "Belle-Epoque" and Art Nouveau Villas and was one of the first seaside resort in the 19th century...

Mers-les-Bains, its breathtaking white cliffs and outstanding "Belle époque" resort district, can be found at the end of the "glass valley" where the valley opens into the sea. Around the Bresle which runs into the sea at this point, huddle the 3 "sister towns" :
> Eu, at the edge of the forest that bears its name, has one of the most beautiful churches in Normandy, Notre-Dame-et-Saint-Laurent
> Le Tréport, fishing port and charming seaside resort, is lively all year round
> Mers-les-Bains, Picardy village flanked by its Norman sisters.

A bit of history...

In 1873, with the arrival of the railway, Mers-les-Bains was transformed into a seaside resort very highly-prized by the Parisians. These amazing villas were then built, giving expression to the explosion in decorative arts at the turn of the last century.

More than 300 of them, including some of exceptional workmanship, still exist today. They are the only group of "Belle Epoque" buildings on the entire coastline of France. After years of oblivion, they are coming back into fashion and setting the tone for buildings along the whole of the Picardy Coast.

Mers-les-Bains today...

Where the Bresle valley opens out, opposite the picturesque port of Le Tréport, Mers-les-Bains, huddled between sea and cliffs, is an excellent place for walking, following the esplanade which runs alongside the beach. In the direction of the cliff, you can visit the Art deco-style Saint Martin's church; "Notre-Dame de la Falaise" higher up offers an unmatched viewing point.

Mers-les-Bains is also the favourite place for windsurfing enthusiasts !
