The Somme 1916 museum

in ALBERT

The life-size tableaux convey an arrestingly realistic ambience imbued with heroism, with reproductions of trench life and treasure exhumed from the dramatic Battle of the Somme.

The Somme 1916 Museum is housed in an underground passage 250 metres long, 10 metres below the centre of Albert!

An exhibition accessible to all, aiming to provide insight and spark emotion. Artefacts in showcases alternate with depictions of the harsh fighting, mud, cold, hygiene and sleepless nights.

L'Historial de la Grande Guerre 

in PERONNE

The "Historial" is a lavish museum devoted to the Great War.

You get a chance to compare notes on what the French, German and British troops experienced on the front.

The permanent collections and temporary exhibitions shed light on military aspects of the Great War. The Historial museum also recounts civilian life at the rear.

There are moving multimedia displays and some surprising exhibits. The museum aims to give a well-rounded account of the war!

As from 2016, the museum is also laying on a site museum in Thiepval !

The memorial interpretation centre has opened up new areas to illustrate the terrible battle of 1916. With its 450 m2 dedicated to the history and remembrance of the battles of the Somme, this new museum interweaves British, German and French accounts of war in the Somme.

Troops from the other side of the world

on show in the SOMME

When war first broke out, the Somme became the scene of fighting among troops from all over the worldSouth African soldiers have their tribute at the Longueval museum, in Delville wood.

On 15 July 1916, 3,153 troops were ordered to take and hold on to the wood at all cost! When they were relieved, on 20 July, only 142 came out of the woods alive. The Franco-Australian Museum is located in Victoria school in Villers-Bretonneux, rebuilt in the aftermath of the war using donations from schoolchildren in the state of Victoria.
