High Tides

High tides : an amazing natural spectacle!

Life around the Baie de Somme follws the rhythm of the tides.

The landscape is constantly changing with the rise and fall of the waters

High tides happen when the moon is full or new, when the moon is full or new, when the Sun and Moon are aligned with the Earth.

At low tide, you have unlimited space to play with, the horizon stretches as far as the eye can see, but at high tide, the water reaches right up to the dikes and, at these times, it washes the salt marshes where the sheep normally graze !

The Baie de Somme has the largest tidal range in the Channel. There can be up to 10 metres between high and low water at the spring and autumn equinoxes
