British Commemorations

Assist to the First World War British Commemorations in the Somme on July 1st marking the beginning of the battle by the British troops.

The 1st July 1916 marks the launching of the Battle of the Somme by the British troops.

Every year, each commemoration is accompagnied by the Somme Battlefields Pipe Band.

The Battle of the Somme in 1916 affected a very large part of the departement. On July 1st 1916, more than 1.5 million of british, german and french soldiers were in confrontation during long months....

The next day, the number of casualties suffered on 1st July proved to have been appalling : 58 000 men fell, including 20 000 killed.

At the end of the Battle of the Somme, we counted more than 1 million persons killed, wounded or missing.

Every year, in memory of the 1st day of this battle, remembrances, moments of intense emotion are organized in La Boisselle, Thiepval and Beaumont-Hamel to pay tribute to the disappeared soldiers.

On 1st July :

7.28 am : Ceremony at Lochnagar Crater in Ovillers-La Boisselle
9.15 am : Ceremony at the Cairn in front of the church in Contalmaison
11.00 am : Ceremony at the Franco-British Memorial in Thiepval (it is recommanded to arrive before 10.45am)
2.30 pm : Ceremony at the Ulster Tower in Thiepval
3.45 pm : Ceremony at the Newfoundland Memorial in Beaumont-Hamel
5.15 pm : Ceremony at the German cemetery and at the War memorial in Fricourt
