This centre opened its doors in Thiepval on July 1st 2004 thanks to its efforts between "the Regional Council of the Somme" and "the Thiepval Project" (which raised a national subscription in Great Britain in the aim to gather funds) with the support of the European Union.
In addition to different services (information centre, shop, showing rooms, drink distributors, sanitary facilities), a vast exhibition space is offered to teach visitors the necessary keys to understanding of the Somme battle, Thiepval history during the WW1. Other boards are devoted to CWGC, Lutyens, reconstruction, remembering duty.

A visit to the Thiepval Memorial ends (or starts!) here! Innovative without being “all digital”, enjoy the Historial of the Great War’s different perspectives on the Battle of the Somme and remembering the soldiers who died. See Joe Sacco’s monumental cartoon and a full-sized replica of Guynemer’s plane. Children will love this comprehensive museum with life-sized exhibits.

In honour of the brothers-in-arms lost on the terrible Somme front, the Historial of the Great War has erected a site museum designed to reinforce our connection with the story of those who fell in the fighting. Gather in the centre of the main hall, a masterful representation of a 1916 trench; soak up the atmosphere of the first day of the battle represented on Joe Sacco’s fresco… Stand together: you won’t leave here unscathed!

En solo

Before visiting the British Memorial, the Thiepval Musuem managed by the Historial of the Great War will give you a greater perception of the bitter combats that raged during the 1916 battle. Surrounded by Joe Sacco’s monumental fresco, you will feel alone in the heart of the fighting on 1st July; further along an interactive display will help you to understand and quietly spend time “face-to-face” with several of the missing as you explore their stories.

Before heading to the Thiepval Memorial, you must visit the visitor centre and new museum, which opened in 2016 and provides the keys to understanding the Battle of the Somme in an original and immersive way. In the museum lobby, learn more about the CWGC and the work it carries out caring for the battlefield memorials and cemeteries. Guided tours of the Thiepval Memorial are also available.
