It was during the second half of the 19th century and in the early 20th century that double-sided flint tools were discovered at the Saint-Acheul site. This particular cutting technique is now known as Acheulean, taking its name from the Saint-Acheul district which has since gained a worldwide reputation. Saint-Acheul archaeological garden was laid out to enhance one of our most ancient sites, while offering a pleasant place to walk in naturally fragrant surroundings with interpretive signs taking you back more than 450,000 years in time. Listed as an historical monument since 1947 and open to the public since 1998, the Saint-Acheul site is an excellent illustration of the history of prehistoric discoveries and their recognition by the scientific community.
