The River Somme flows into the Channel forming a 72 km2 estuary. It comprises three areas: the lower part revealed during spring tides, the sandy, marshy area which is an abundant source of food for birds, and the uppert part covered by vegetation.
It is a great site for observing flora and fauna. Hundreds of bird species land there during migration. The estuary is internationally renowned for its rich ecology; the northern part is a protected nature reserve. It is covered by the international RAMSAR wetlands convention and is a member of the World's Most Beautiful Bays Club.
