Between 1901 to 1956 the lifeboat, "Benoît Champy", went to sea many times to help boats in difficulty. Designed to face the worst conditions at sea, this sail-oar lifeboat, 10.10 metres long, with a crew of 12 men, was unsinkable, self-righting, had automatic water drainage and needed 12 horses to be launched. Today it is a listed historical monument and is carefully maintained by the 'Association des Pompons Rouges'. Open Saturday morning, 9.30am to 12.30pm, all year round, every day in July/August, 3 to 6pm. No admission charge, book ahead for groups.
