Bypassing the Fricourt salient from the south, the British 7th Division captured the village on the afternoon of July 1, 1916. But the name Mametz has remained linked to the wood to the north-east. Mametz Wood was a place of resistance and danger. However, the Welsh military recaptured it on July 12, 1916, after 8 days of fierce fighting and at the cost of very heavy losses. The Welsh path leads to the memorial. Inaugurated on July 11, 1987, the monument to the 38th Welsh Division features a red dragon, the emblem of Wales. With its wings in motion, it holds barbed wire in its claws as it heads towards Mametz wood, a reminder of the fierceness of the fighting.
