The historic town of Montdidier suffered greatly during the battles of the First World War. It retains some traces of its past such as the St Peter and the Saint-Sépulcre Churches from the 15th and 16th centuries, both heavily damaged during the war and restored after 1918. The Flemish Town Hall and its Art Deco frescoes bear testimony to the architecture of the reconstruction period. Montdidier was also the birthplace of Parmentier, benefactor of humankind, who greatly contributed to the spread and consumption of the humble potato in France.
