Picardy Museum

a unique place

Built between 1855 and 1867, on the initiative of the "Société des Antiquaires de Picardie", with the support of Napoleon III, it was the very first French building designed to become a museum. It had been completely closed since 2017 but the galleries of the first were no longer visible since 2008. It has been completely renovated, revealing under the layers of paint, painted decorations of exceptional beauty. The collections have grown and cover the entire history of art: from archaeological and Egyptian collections in the basement [discover in particular the famous mummy or the recently discovered Venus by Renancourt] to contemporary art [Bacon, Picasso, Miro , Dubuffet, Picabia, Balthus ....], through the medieval collections including the Puys d'Amiens, masterpieces of the cathedral.

New arrivals

in anthology

Beautifully painted decorations have been brought up to date. This is the case of the Salon de l'Impératrice, dedicated to Eugenie, Napoleon's wife. Painted decorations and marquetry make it a work of art in its own right.

Also discover the cabinet of curiosities which presents unusual objects from the ethnography and natural history collections. It is in particular a mediation tool intended for the school public.

Gardens

The museum opens to the outside. Terraces and gardens are accessible to all for a walk or a picnic.

Painted decorations, exceptional works, people come here for the place and for the collections.

The "Grand Salon"

Monumental

Rediscovery of the gigantism and the pageantry of the Grand Salon. This superb setting accommodates paintings of impressive dimensions. For example, we admire Lady Godiva, a work by Jules Lefebvre restored in 2013 and which measures 6.20 x 3.90 meters. Albert Maignan's Voix du Tocsin canvas had been rolled since 1918, now restored, it took place on the Pompeian red walls.

Guided tours and lectures are available at all times to get to know the museum's collections intimately. The Museum is also open to other artistic displines, meetings with theater, dance and music will be regularly offered to you.

For aficionados who don't want to miss anything, consider subscribing!
