The origin of the word "Courtgain" comes from "petit salaire" and refers to the picturesque sailors' quarter, crossed by two small parallel streets: the rue des Moulins and the rue des Pilotes which end not far from the Calvaire des marins and its oratory from where the view is superb. The houses dating from the end of the 18th and beginning of the 19th century, built in brick, with parts in mud, with black foundations and shimmering colours, still respect the age-old tradition of the fishermen who used to go on board the "sauterelliers" to fish for grey shrimp. Beautifully flowered, this district hosts the Fête de la Mer every summer.
