The Australian state has built a memorial on the site of General Monash's brilliant victory on July 4, 1918, where remnants of German trenches are still preserved.
It is a memorial dedicated to the memory of Australian soldiers who served in the Australian Corps in France during the Great War.
The memorial, built with stones from Australia, is located on the plateau east of the village on the site of the Battle of Hamel. Several panels explain the course of the conflict and some traces can still be seen in the landscape.

Not far from Villers-Bretonneux, in the upper part of Le Hamel, this war memorial commemorates the battle fought on 4th July 1918, commanded by General Monash. For an exciting family outing, park at the entrance to the site and let your children run free along the path to the memorial. There are information panels describing the unusual nature of this battle, involving artillery, infantry, aviation, tanks and parachutists (won in only 93 minutes). A commemorative site on the Australian Remembrance trail, recalling an event in which the term "brothers in arms" must surely apply. It was here that the German advance was halted in 1918. The commanding officer was Australian but his comrades in arms were Canadian, American, British, Australian and French. Leave your vehicle in the car park and tour the site as you wish: some to enjoy the open views over the valley, others to follow the interpretative trail to the memorial and trench.
